Oak Class - Years 1 & 2

Welcome to Oak Class! This is the happy home of Year 1 and 2 for 2026 - 2027.

Mrs Nicholson teaches on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mrs Carter teaches on a Thursday and Friday.

Mrs Cook and Mrs Judd are our Teaching Assistants.

Week 7

It has been another busy week in Oak Class! We are all proud of how hard the children have been working.

In English, we have been focusing on the skills needed to write a diary recount. The children know that a diary describes the things that they did in the past. Still working within the context of the story 'My Two Blankets', the children have imagined that they met the girl from the story in the park and have practised constructing sentences to describe the things they might have done in the park. Next week, the children will be putting all of their skills together to write a diary recount of the time that they met a new friend in the park.

In Maths, we have moved on from shape and have now started to learn about measuring length and height. We started by using non-standard units such as cubes to measure the length of objects. Year 2 have progressed on to using centimetres, practising drawing lines of a particular length accurately with a ruler. The children have enjoyed the practical measuring activities this week.

This week's Science investigation involved testing materials to see if they were tough. A range of materials were put to the test. You will have to ask Oak Class which material was the strongest and which was the easiest to rip!

Oak children have been practising their lines of a Harvest acrostic poem, ready for next Tuesday's Harvest Service. We are really impressed with how well the children have learnt their lines. Thank you for the time that has been spent at home practising!

Week 6

This week has flown by!

In English, the children have started to write their own stories based on the structure of the book 'My Two Blankets'. The children have imagined a character who has had to go somewhere new, just like Cartwheel in the story. In the original story, Cartwheel's blanket provided comfort as it reminded her of home. Oak children thought of something or someone which might remind their main character of home. They are going to continue with their story imagining the meeting of a new friend, bringing the story to a happy conclusion. The children have been so imaginative with their story ideas! We have been working hard at creating simple sentences, remembering capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.  The children are all so proud of their story writing this week!

There has been a lot of reading going on within Oak Class families - thank you! Several more leaves have been proudly added to our reading tree. Well done to all those children who have reached their first target of 10 reads or even the second target of 25 reads! Keep up the fabulous reading!

Week 5

During Maths lessons this week, children investigated and developed their fluency with number bonds to 10 and also to 20.  Children used ten frames and counters to represent the number bonds and were keen at spotting patterns. They also continued investigating the properties of 3D shapes, being able to recognise and count the faces.

Lots of fun was had at Forest School on Wednesday, playing with conkers. Have a look at the photos to see how creative the children were at making structures for the conkers to roll down!

In Science, the children very much enjoyed being scientists, carrying out an investigation into the absorbency of different materials.

In English, we have started to read the story My Two Blankets. Using this as a model, we have considered how every story has a beginning, a middle and an end, in preparation for writing our own stories next week.

Well done for all the reading that has been taking place this week! We have more reading leaves on our tree with one leaf representing the next target of 25 reads!

Week 4

It has been another busy week in Oak Class!

Our Reading Tree Challenge is up and running and we are delighted that we have got our very first leaves on our reading tree! Congratulations to the children who have read 10 times with an adult at home and so have earned their first leaf on the tree. We wonder how many more leaves there could be by this time next week?

In English, we have been learning about adjectives, trying to choose the best adjectives to describe animals. We then learnt about alliteration and so tackled the challenge of thinking of adjectives which start with the same letter as the animal they are describing. Together, we thought of some ideas such as a massive monkey, an enormous elephant, a beautiful bear and a gigantic giraffe.

At Forest School, on Wednesday, the children enjoyed making nests and looking for signs of Autumn.

In Science, the children have continued their investigations into the properties of materials. They imagined they were creating a teddy bear for a toddler with different materials which would provide different textures for the toddler to feel. As they chose each material, the children were encouraged to describe its properties using their increasing scientific vocabulary.

Week 3

Week 3 in Oak Class has flown by! The children have all been working incredibly hard.

In English, the children have thought of some superb descriptive sentences when retelling a familiar story. Their eagerness to use a range of descriptive vocabulary is wonderful to see.

We have re-launched our reading challenge this week. Once a child has completed 10 reads at home they can earn a leaf on our reading tree. We wonder who will be the first to earn a reading leaf this year?

In Maths, we are working on some new expectations for how we set out our work. The children are doing amazingly well with this and we are very proud of them.

In P.E we were thinking about how to work together as a team. Using a parachute, the children were able to work together to keep a ball moving around without it falling off! We discovered that gentle movements whilst working together helped to keep the ball on the parachute for as long as possible.

In Music, we went outside to the Story Throne and created some fun music rhythms in a circle, thinking about timing and pitch.

Oak children have also been super scientists, investigating different materials and sorting them into categories.

Week 2

Oak Class have all been working so hard this week. We are all so proud of the way that they have started this new school year. Year 1 are learning the routines of a new class so well and Year 2 are demonstrating their maturity now that they are the oldest children in the class.

In English, we have been sharing the story Bedtime for Monsters. Whilst investigating the character of the monster, the children thought of some excellent questions to ask about the monster, making use of question marks accurately.

Some of our Maths work has involved recognising 2D shapes. We clearly have some superb mathematicians in Oak Class, keen to apply their knowledge of shapes to reasoning and problem solving situations. What a wonderful start!
